Mrs. Van Zula Hunt

Mrs. Van Hunt was a Beale Street mainstay from her arrival in Memphis in the 1920s until her passing at age 93+ in 1995. Her first recordings were made with the jug bands around 1929. By the time of this session in October 1969, her style of singing had changed little (Mrs. Hunt was never one to yield to fleeting fashions) and retained a classical tone whether the song was raunchy blues, as in this sample, or reverent gospel. She is accompanied by Mose Vinson on this clip of "Jelly Sellin' Woman." Listen carefully to the lyrics of the song, or else that dainty demeanor will fool you.
